Mexican Gastronomy World Heritage Site

Mexican food system was the first one ever to obtain this acknowledgment from UNESCO.

In 2010, UNESCO granted Mexican gastronomy the acknowledgment as a World Heritage Site.  It was the first time ever that a food system received such acknowledgment.

This qualification has a great value, it reminds and acknowledges the history, creativity and diversity of one of the great and variable gastronomies of the world, together with China and India.

After this acknowledgment, only mediterranean systems have achieved it (encompassing several countries), and the French and Japanese traditional cuisines.

Although evolved through time, Mexican food keeps the same base as centuries ago: corn, beans, and chile, and the ancient techniques are still in use: the molcajete, the comal, and the clay pot.

This acknowledgment not only allows Mexican gastronomy to acquire major fame throughout the world, but it is also a way to preserve popular and cultural knowledge, since more people are aware of the importance of this system.
